Russ Freeman is sitting on top of the world these days. As leader of the Rippingtons - a band the Los Angeles Times called "one of the most popular and influential groups" in the smooth-jazz arena - he recently celebrated the bands tenth anniversary with the release of a chart-topping album. "Black Diamond," Rippingtons tenth album, quickly soared to Billboards Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart, deposing the extraordinarily popular artist, Kenny G. who had reigned for 50 weeks. The album - with its mix of pop-oriented music and edgier, more artistic stretches - reflects Mr. Freemans passion for his favorite sport - skiing.
"In some ways its ironic to be creating skiing music because one of the most unique aspects of the experience is the silence that surrounds you as you go downhill," Mr. Freeman told the people at Windham Hill Jazz which backs his new imprint, Peak Records.
